BEN CRAVEN: PART ONE
PSYCHOLOGY IN DESIGN
Another interesting consideration in design was raised by Ben. The idea of focusing on psychology within our design work. He stressed the importance of the 7 + or - 2 Rule. If there are more than 7 things to deal with you need to design a method of managing them. An aid of sorts.
He gave some good examples of this; buttons on radios, commas in large numbers, bank card spacing and raised lines on rulers. This is something you might not immediately consider a huge part of design. I think it raises a new perspective on things. Everything is designed, even the numbers on your bank card. Which is something I never really would have considered before. It’s such a simple thing but someone had to design a solution to that.
I think that is my main take away from this. Nothing is too small or too insignificant, it all needs carefully considered. The way we interact with things is basically the most important aspect so we might as well design it to be as straight forward as possible.
